🏠 Top 20 Frequently Asked Questions About Moving House
Expert Moving Advice from Sharp Removals Limited (Updated: July 2026)
Moving home doesn’t have to be stressful. At Sharp Removals Limited, we’re proud to offer professional, reliable, and affordable removal services across the UK — designed to make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Below are the most common questions we’re asked by our customers when planning a house move.
1. How far in advance should I book Sharp Removals?
We recommend booking your removal date 4–6 weeks in advance, especially during busy times such as summer or month-end. Early booking guarantees your preferred date and allows our team to plan your move efficiently.
2. How much does a House removal service in Stockpot cost? (Updated: July 2026)
A house removal in Stockport typically costs £800 plus VAT for a smaller property and around £1,600 plus Vat for a larger 4 bedroom home, depending on how much you’re moving, the distance, access at both ends, and whether you add packing or storage.
As a rough national reference point, UK removals in 2026 range from around £800 for a small move up to £2,200+ for a large one — but local, Stockport-specific figures will always be more accurate than a national average, which is why we’ve broken ours down below. For an exact price, we provide a free, no-obligation quote based on your actual move.
| Property size | Typical price range* | Typical crew / vehicle | Typical time |
| Studio / 1-bed flat | £550 plus VAT | Large van | Full day |
| 2-bed house/flat | £750 plus VAT | 1 × 7.5 tonne moving truck | Full day |
| 3-bed house | £1,100 plus VAT | 1 large 18 tonne moving truck | 1 day |
| 4-bed+ house | £1,600 plus VAT | 1 large 18 tonne truck plus smaller truck where required | 1–2 days; larger moves are typically completed over 2 days, with day 1 used for loading boxes and non-essential furniture |
*Prices are intended as a guide only and may vary following official survey and quote.
3. What actually changes my removal price?
Access: Ground-floor with parking right outside is the cheapest scenario. Flights of stairs, no lift, or restricted parking (common around Stockport town centre, offerton, edgeley and Portwood) can add time and cost, this will be assessed when we visit to assess your move to provide a tailored service for every move.
Packing: A full packing service adds to the price but saves a significant amount of time and stress; a fragile-only or self-pack option costs less. Packing typically adds from £350 + VAT for a small flat to £1000 + VAT for a large detached house, this is all dependant on how many belongings there are to pack and amount of fragile items which require extra time care and attention. A great tip here is to de-clutter before your survey then we can accurately assess what requires packing and will allow us to make your quote as competitive as possible.
Storage: If there’s a gap between moving out and moving in, short-term storage is priced separately. A typical 3 bedroom house storage would be around £150 + VAT per week, we do have our own storage facility which we always keep 2 emergency units available just in case of an emergency, this also means we are not reliant on third parties or opening hours.
Timing: Weekend moves are often cheaper than weekdays, and moving mid-month tends to have more availability for our cost less than moving at the very end of the month, when demand peaks.
How much you’re moving: A house that’s been decluttered moves faster and cheaper than one that hasn’t.
4. Can i get an exact price?
The ranges above are a starting point, not a quote — every move is different, which is why we provide a free, no-obligation survey and quote based on your actual property, timing and requirements. Contact us
5. What do you include as standard?
- Goods-in-transit insurance on every move – No hidden charges & peace of mind.
- A professional full time, uniformed, trained crew.
- The right size vehicle for your move, confirmed after a free survey.
- Our premium specially made furniture protection equipment.
- Complimentary use of our hanging wardrobe service.
- A true family run company who actually care about our clients. There are 4 of the family who work in the company as well as our other staff which our adopted into the Sharp Family.
6. How can i save money of the cost of my house move?
- Book on a weekend if moving to a rental or keys are already available,
- Avoid the last few days of the month, when demand — and often price — is highest.
- Declutter and take a car-load of items yourself before moving day.
- Pack non-fragile items yourself and let the crew handle the heavy lifting and fragiles.
7. What size of vehicle will I need for my move?
The right vehicle depends on how much you’re moving, not a fixed rule — Sharp Removals runs a full fleet, from Luton-sized vans for smaller flats and moves up to large removal trucks for bigger family homes, and we match the vehicle (and crew) to your job during your free survey. This matters because getting the vehicle size right, rather than guessing, means your whole move can usually be done in fewer trips and in one loading day, with less handling of your belongings along the way — which is really what “the right size van” is actually for, beyond just fitting everything in.
- Luton van: studio flats, 1-bed properties, or smaller moves
- Medium removal truck: 2–3 bed houses
- Large removal truck: 3-4 bed+ houses or larger household moves, often completed in a single day rather than multiple runs.
You don’t need to work out which one applies to you — we do that for you at the free survey, and it’s part of why our moves stay on schedule.
8. How long will my move take?
Most house moves with Sharp Removals take between a day and two days, depending on the size of your property — we confirm the exact timing after a free survey, rather than leaving it as a guess.
As a general guide: typically we arrive for 08:30 complete loading for 12:00 then travel to your new home then we have our lunch while you go and hand your old keys over and collect your new house keys.
- Studio or 1-bed flat — half a day to a full day
- 2–3 bed house — one full day
- 4-bed+ house or a longer-distance move — one to two days, occasionally with an extra day added for very large homes
A few things can shift the timing either way: how much packing is already done, access at both properties (stairs, parking, lift availability), and whether you’re moving within Stockport or further afield. None of that needs working out in advance — after your free survey, we’ll give you a clear, specific schedule for your move so you know exactly what to expect on the day.
9. What is the process for booking in with Sharp Removals?
Booking with Sharp Removals is a straightforward four-step process: get in touch, we survey your move, the earlier this is in the sale process, the better, as this will give you much more time to get a proposed moving date agreed and booked in with us.
Once you have a proposed date- check our availability before confirming with the solicitor then once a day is agreed between all parties, we take a deposit to secure that day. Once the deposit is paid we will allocated one of our teams to your move which ensures no one can be double booked or let down by us.
Get in touch. Contact us with your moving dates and a rough idea of the property size — this can be by phone, email, or the contact form on our site.
- Free, no-obligation survey. We assess your move (property size, access, distance, and any packing or storage you need) and provide a clear, itemised quote — no hidden fees.
- Get a proposed date and check with our availability before confirming.
- Agree with all parties.
- Pay the deposit to secure the your moving day with Sharp Removals.
- Move House
We recommend booking 4–6 weeks ahead where possible, especially in summer or around the end of the month, when demand is highest — this guarantees your preferred date rather than leaving it to availability closer to the time.
10. Do you offer packing services and materials?
Absolutely. Sharp Removals provides a range of professional packing options to suit your budget:
- ✅ Full packing service – we pack everything for you
- 📦 Fragile-only packing – perfect for delicate items
- 🏷️ Self-packing – we supply competitively priced high-quality boxes and materials.
11. How many boxes will i need?
Most moves need somewhere between 40 and 150 boxes, depending on the size of the property — roughly 20–25 for a 1-bed flat, 35–40 for a 2-bed home, and 50–55 for a 3-bed house. These are averages though, and it comes down more to how much you own than the number of bedrooms, so it’s always worth ordering a few more than you think you’ll need, rather than running short on moving day.
| Property size | Typical number of boxes |
| 1-bed flat | Around 30 boxes |
| 2-bed house/flat | Around 40–60 boxes |
| 3-bed house | Typically 60–80 boxes |
| 4-bed detached house | Typically 80–120 boxes |
| 5-bed house | Typically 100–160+ boxes |
Tip: A rough mix that works well for most homes is mostly small and medium boxes (for books, kitchenware and anything heavy), a handful of large boxes for lighter, bulkier items like bedding and cushions, plus a couple of specialist boxes for wardrobe items or picture frames and mirrors.
If you’d rather not guess, we supply good-quality boxes and packing materials as part of our self-pack option, and we’re happy to recommend the right quantity and mix for your specific home when we carry out your free survey — so you’re not over-ordering or caught short.
12. Can I leave items in drawers or wardrobes?
For safety and protection, we recommend emptying furniture before the move. Light clothing can remain in sturdy drawers if approved during your pre-move survey but all other items of furniture must be empty.
13. Are my belongings insured during the move?
Yes — all our removal services include standard goods-in-transit insurance.
14. How long will my move take?
Every move is unique, but as a guide:
- Flats or small homes: One day.
- 3–4 bedroom houses: Between 1 – 2 days.
- Large or long-distance moves: 2–3 days
After your free survey, we’ll provide a detailed schedule so you know exactly what to expect.
15. Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture or disconnect appliances?
Yes — our trained movers can dismantle and reassemble furniture as part of your package. For safety reasons, gas or electrical disconnections should be carried out by a certified engineer.
16. What happens if my moving date changes or is delayed?
At Sharp Removals we pride ourselves on delivering on every commitment. We also understand that plans change unexpectedly. To help us manage flexibility and our ability to deliver on every commitment, we take a deposit at the time of booking. If you notify us of a change of plans greater than 14 days from your moving date, your deposit can be moved to an alternate date with Sharp Removals. If your plans change within 14 days of your moving date, your deposit is forfeited. We are always in high demand and routinely refuse bookings where we have made a prior commitment.
17. Do you offer storage solutions?
Yes, we do. We provide secure short- and long-term storage for customers who need extra time before moving in. Our collection, storage, and redelivery services are handled by the same trusted team for your convenience.
18. How can I make moving day go smoothly?
Here are our top moving-day tips:
- Clearly label all boxes by room
- Keep essentials (documents, chargers, keys, laptops, phones etc.) in a separate bag
- Confirm details with your movers 1–2 days before
- Reserve parking at both addresses if possible
Our experienced team will take care of the heavy lifting so you can relax and enjoy your new home.
19. ✅ What are the key things to consider when choosing a removal company?
The main things worth checking are insurance, transparent pricing, real customer reviews, and how experienced the company is — a good removal company should be able to answer all of these clearly, without you having to dig for the information.
- Insurance: Make sure the company holds goods-in-transit insurance as standard, so your belongings are covered while they’re being moved, not just once they’re in your new home. Sharp Removals includes this on every move.
- Clear, upfront pricing: Look for a company that gives you a proper quote after seeing your move — ideally a free survey — rather than a vague estimate with room for hidden extras later.
- Genuine customer reviews: Check recent reviews on Google rather than just testimonials on the company’s own website, since these are harder to cherry-pick. Sharp Removals holds a 5.0 rating from over 560 Google reviews.
- Experience and local reputation. How long has the company been operating, and are they known locally? Sharp Removals was formed in Stockport and has been ranked the top removals and storage company in the area by 3 Best Rated.
- A clear point of contact. You should know who to contact with questions before, during and after your move, rather than being passed around.
